Indiana Fever: Reporter Who Was Called ‘Creepy’ By Fans for Caitlin Clark Gesture Drops Lengthy Column To Apologize
Indianapolis Star-USA TODAY NETW

Just recently, a reporter had a creepy exchange with Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, leading her fans to lash out at him online. In response, Gregg Doyel dropped a lengthy column to apologize to the former Iowa Hawkeyes guard.

This week was a big one for Clark after she was selected first overall by the Fever in this year’s WNBA Draft. The Iowa guard’s selection comes after four years of showcasing her dominance in women’s college basketball.

The culmination of Clark’s run with the Hawkeyes saw her broke Pete Maravich’s old record to become the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer. However, she was unable to lead Iowa over the undefeated South Carolina Gamecocks to win the title in the recently-concluded NCAA Tournament.

Shortly after her college stint, Clark went first in the Draft for Indiana. She was then presented by the franchise in her first press conference, the same event where Indiana Star columnist Gregg Doyel made the guard’s hand-heart gesture before her.

An awkward exchange then occurred that led the journalist to tell Clark to give her the gesture for them to get along fine. Fortunately, Clark handled the situation well while her fans cooked Doyel online for his inappropriate behavior.

Reporter Who Made Creepy Gesture Toward Indiana Fever Star Caitlin Clark Drops Lengthy Apology Column

Due to the backlash he received from Clark’s fans, Doyel has come out with a lengthy column to apologize for his actions. In an article he wrote for the Indy Star:

“In my haste to be clever, to be familiar and welcoming (or so I thought), I offended Caitlin and her family.

After going through denial, and then anger – I’m on the wrong side of this? Me??? – I now realize what I said and how I said it was wrong, wrong, wrong. I mean it was just wrong.

Caitlin Clark, I’m so sorry,” Doyel wrote.

It remains to be seen what action Doyel will further take after issuing his apology via a column. Hopefully, the Indiana Star reporter won’t have to resort to such antics when facing female personalities.

Clark is scheduled to face the Dallas Wings on May 14 when the new WNBA season starts. By then, fans will be looking forward to the Fever star’s debut as a professional after years of dominating college basketball.
