UNC HC Mack Brown explains why ceiling for QB Drake Maye is 'so high'

Drake Maye is already considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the NFL Draft, but his head coach at North Carolina, Mack Brown, believes his ceiling might be higher than the rest.

Speaking with the ACC Network at North Carolina's pro day on Thursday, Brown explained what he sees in his former signal-caller.

"The ceiling is so high because he's only played two years," Brown said. "I mean this guy, he's got Super Bowl written all over him at some point out there. And that's why all these people are here today watching him."

Compared to the other quarterbacks projected to go off the board in the first three picks of this year's NFL Draft, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels each had more than two seasons of starting experience at the collegiate level. So, the belief is that anyone drafting Maye will see a quarterback who continues to grow and could easily be the face of the franchise for a decade or more.

Despite starting only two seasons with the Tar Heels, Maye led North Carolina to a 17-9 record and ranks fifth in program history in passing yards (8,018) and fourth in touchdowns (63). He also proved dangerous on the ground, rushing for 1,147 yards and 16 scores.

While the pro day was technically a stage for all North Carolina players to showcase their skills for NFL scouts, most attendees were clearly there to see Maye. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots, who own the No. 2 and No. 3 overall picks respectively in April's draft, had significant presences on hand. The Denver Broncos, picking at No. 12 overall, also surprisingly showed up in force.

After choosing not to throw at the NFL Combine, Maye's performance on Thursday was impressive, for the most part. Aside from a few misfires, he showcased his cannon for an arm over a script of 60 throws, hitting receivers in stride and throwing deep dimes off his back foot.

It remains to be seen which team ultimately selects Maye. However, on Thursday's "Pat McAfee Show," McAfee relayed intriguing comments about Maye's draft stock from former longtime QB coach-turned-North Carolina consultant Clyde Christensen.

"The way Clyde was talking, I don't think Chicago's not doing a little bit of snooping around on what Drake Maye could potentially be in the NFL," McAfee said. "That's a wild thing to hear because we've all assumed Caleb is the guy, then Jayden, and we heard Drake fell, but instead, it seems like it's going in the opposite direction."
