The Houston Texans found a way to make a deal with their best player. First-year head coach DeMeco Ryans will have an anchor for the offensive line when they decide who their starting quarterback will be in 2023. It’s widely thought the Texans, who own the second overall pick, will draft a quarterback in the first round. That player will have their blindside protected while they develop.
According to Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the Texans are extending left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a three-year deal. The contract has $50 million fully guaranteed and is worth $70 million. That will make Tunsil the highest-paid tackle in NFL history.

Tunsil is a former 2016 first-round selection by the Miami Dolphins. He was traded to the Texans when the Dolphins were in rebuild mode in 2019 before they drafted Tua Tagovailoa. There was suspicion the Texans might do the same with Tunsil this offseason. But the two parties were able to agree to a hefty deal. Tunsil is a highly regarded offensive tackle. He’s only given up 14 sacks in his seven seasons in the NFL.
