Instant Reaction: Blue Jays blew a lead in the bottom of the ninth and lost 3-2 to the Orioles

That’s not a great way to end a game.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Jays played the second of two games against the Baltimore Orioles, falling 3-2 and losing late in the game. Due to the rainout on Tuesday, the two teams split the series 1-1, with the Blue Jays record falling to 19-23.

As the Blue Jays tend to do, they went down early as Jordan Westburgh hit his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the first to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. This would be the only run that Kikuchi would give up this afternoon.

The Blue Jays took the lead on one swing in the top of the third, as Bo Bichette hit his sixth double to score Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer, giving the Jays a 2-1 lead, which they’d hold onto until the bottom of the ninth.

Jordan Romano came in looking for his seventh save of the season, but allowed Westburg to hit a single, before the next batter, Adley Rutschman, hit the game-winning home run, his third of the two-game series. Blue Jays lost 3-2.

Things worth mentioning…

Yusei Kikuchi once again pitched a great game, finishing with a line of 4.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K with a home run given up. He was dealing, striking out nine of the 13 outs he got in the game, but was pulled after 88 pitches.

Bo Bichette is back, it’s safe to say. On Wednesday, he finished with two hits, extending his hit streak to seven games, and was the only Blue Jay with a multi-hit game.

George Springer was one of three players with a double, Bichette had one, and Kevin Kiermaier also hit his third double of the season. The other player with a hit was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. , who also made a terrific play to get an out at home plate.

Yimi García has been nothing short of fantastic this season, in this outing, he pitched an inning and two thirds, walking two and striking out a batter. His season ERA sits at a fantastic 0.53.

Zach Pop has pitched well since rejoining the Jays, finishing with an inning and a third pitch and striking out a batter on Wednesday. His season ERA is 2.57, and it’ll be hard to send him back down whenever Chad Green and Bowden Francis are healthy.

Up next: Thursday is thankfully an off day, but they’ll return to Toronto on Friday for a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, with Friday’s game starting at 7:07 PM ET. Chris Bassitt is the scheduled starter for that game.
